Welcome to the Old Tavern Club, a front for a shifter rescue organization. Can the club rescue shifters and make the perfect matches while they’re at it?

Can abused spirit bear shifter Harry find home and happiness with lion shifter Metro?

When spirit bear shifter Harry bursts into the Old Tavern calling for sanctuary, Pirou is more than happy to offer it to the bleeding and terrified man. After all, hysterical and clearly abused, Harry is just the kind of shifter the rescue operation is made for.

Metro is a friend of the rescue who comes in once a month to do the books. When he sees Harry, he feels sympathy for the little bear, and something deeper, too. As he spends more time with Harry, Metro falls for him.

Will Harry ever be able to let go of the things that were done to him long enough to let Metro in? Only time and patience will tell.

Will Harry’s secrets drive Metro away?

Rescued bear shifter Harry is settling in at the Old Tavern Club, but he’s still holding tightly to his secrets, worried that he will not only lose his sanctuary, but his Master Lion’s love as well. Any strong emotions bring his talent to the fore, though, leaving swaths of destruction in their wake, and Metro knows it can’t continue.

Metro believes he can help Harry find control, but only if Harry talks to him about what happened when Harry was with the Jackals. It’s not going to be easy, though, to push past Harry’s doubts and fears.

Will the two be able to achieve the peace, joy and control they’re working so hard to find together?

Book Review

The Old Tavern Club, aka a rescue for abused and hunted shifters, has become a haven or even the new home for quite a few men over the first few volumes of this series. None of the previous applicants for sanctuary have made quite as dramatic entry as Harry, a spirit bear on the run who only barely makes it to safety. Pirou, who runs the place, wants to help – but Harry is too traumatized and hysterical to let anyone touch him. Metro, a lion shifter who does the club’s books and happens to be around when Harry arrives, is more determined – he feels a special connection to Harry from the start.
Harry is small for one of his species, and it’s because he has been starved and mistreated for a significant time. He mentions jackals, who sound like really bad guys, but he isn’t ready to divulge a lot about himself or his psi abilities. They are a secret, and Harry fears people will hurt him because of them. Once his injuries have been treated and he has some food in him, the real job begins. He has to learn to trust, and with his history, that is a daunting task.

Metro is a big, strong lion shifter, and very protective of Harry from the first time he lays eyes on him. He wants to go tear up these “jackals”, but Harry can’t remember where they are. Instead Metro focuses on making Harry feel safe, get some meat on his bones, and get him to control his abilities to avoid significant damage being done to the club.

Harry and Metro do not have an easy start, but the basic attraction between them makes for a hopeful beginning. Harry manages to begin to trust the big, strong man once he sees how careful Metro is with him, but I have a feeling there is more to come.

If you like the ‘Shifter Rescue’ series, if you want to see an abused bear shifter find his feet again with the unexpected help of a strong lion shifter, and if you’re looking for a sweet story of rescue and new hope, then you will probably like this novella.

As suspected at the end of ‘Spirit’, where Harry manages to make it to safety in the shifter rescue run by Pirou and is taken in by Metro, Harry and Metro have a few more issues to work through before Harry can begin to get over the horrors and torture the jackals exposed him to. A few more details emerge in this second story about Harry and Metro’s relationship, and I was horrified even more. These jackals need to be brought to justice!

Harry is beginning to settle in to his new life. He still can’t quite believe he made it and keeps fearing it will all be taken away from him again if he doesn’t behave. Or if he tells anyone about his big secret… But thanks to Metro’s excellent care, Harry gradually opens up to Metro – in more than one way.

Metro has figured out that Harry is his mate, despite the fact that he is a bear shifter, not the lion shifter mate Metro expected. Now that they are beginning to build a relationship of trust, and the first tendrils of love begin to weave through their shared life, Metro wants to help Harry find control of his abilities so they can eventually leave the club and return to his den.

If you like stories where trust is the basis of a romantic relationship, if you think that Harry and Metro deserve happiness together, and if you’re looking for a read full of sweet discoveries and lots of loving, then you will probably like this novella.
