Book Blurb

They can escape their enemies, but not the desire between them.

Prosecutor Camden Warren is on the fast track to professional nirvana. With his charm, his sharp legal mind, and his father as chief judge in the highest court in NY, he can’t fail. Nothing can derail his rise to the top… until an attempt on his life forces him to accept the help of a man he walked out on five years ago.

Wounded in the line of duty, Lieutenant Elijah Stephenson wants to ride his new desk job until retirement—not take a glorified babysitting gig with more risk than it’s worth… especially not protecting the entitled lawyer who disappeared after the best sex of their lives.

The threat against Camden’s life is real, but their passion for each other might prove the greatest danger they’ve yet to face.

Book Review

One-night stands are usually not meant to be the start of something more permanent, but in this story, both main characters have not forgotten their encounter five years ago. Much has happened since, and when their paths cross this time, it is time for a not-quite second chance. I say “not quite” because neither of them intends to make things permanent when Elijah is asked to protect Camden for a couple of days – despite both of them remembering exactly how good they were together. The mix of imminent danger, one super supportive and one asinine family, and some very hot physical activity makes for a very entertaining read.

Camden grew up in a wealthy family with high ambitions – and he has paid the price that often comes with privilege. In a word, he is lonely. His family has plans for him that he doesn’t like because his ambitions, if he is honest with himself, are not those of his father. He likes his job, but he’d rather be a defense attorney than a DA. He has never stood up to their ideas – but with his life threatened and Elijah in close proximity, it looked to me like that was going to change. The author took her sweet time getting there, and I loved every minute.

Elijah is an experienced cop who has successfully worked in Vice for years and that is not a job that lends itself for building a personal relationship. Now that he is back on duty six months after a serious injury and has successfully passed the lieutenant exam, all he wants is the desk job he has been promised – except his superiors have other ideas. Elijah is not amused – but his captain gives him little choice. When he hears it is Camden, the man who ran out of him five years earlier after a very memorable night spent together, Elijah almost balks. It is something in Camden’s eyes that makes him reconsider…

Camden and Elijah come from pretty much opposite backgrounds, but they have enough in common that, once they stop bristling and start opening their eyes, they quickly bond on an unexpectedly deep level. Yes, the sex may be the catalyst, but what keeps them interested is less tangible. Both are workaholics in dire need for a personal life, and devoting some time to each other gives them the “excuse” they need. Both have a need for intimacy, if for different reasons, and it takes them quite a while to build the trust required to open up. Watching them get closer was a lot of fun and added an extra layer to all the criminal and legal shenanigans going on.

If you like your romances with lots of hesitation, snark, and some real danger thrown in for good measure, if you are a believer in the idea that opposites attract, and if you’re looking for a read filled with humor, beautiful family moments, a dangerous organization out to kill whoever is between them and increasing their power, and lots of heat between two great guys, then you will probably like this novel.
