Shep's just your average all-American cowboy. He runs his own ranch and rides the occasional saddle bronc. Nothing special there. Unless you look too closely at his boyfriend.
Descended from a long line of Native American mustang shifters, Charlie "Hoss" Running Horse is anything but average.
When Coyote takes a shine to Shep, he decides that Hoss has got to go. With the theft of the medicine horseshoe that allows Hoss to shift from mustang to human, Coyote sets his evil plan to have his way with Shep in motion.
Will Shep be able to save Hoss before it's too late? Or will Coyote's plan come to fruition?
“He's not just my horse, He's my dreams. He's my happiness. He's my heart, He's my laughter. He's my teacher. He's my sanity and the best part of me.” ~ unknown
Shep and Charlie (Hoss), of 'Save a Horse, Dive a Cowboy' by Kayla Jameth, have a secret that they are afraid to share with anyone else. Everybody knows they are in love and living together, but no one, except for Charlie's family, knows that Charlie is a horse shifter. They are afraid to tell anyone because Charlie's whole family are also horse shifters and they fear reprisal if anyone else finds out.
Charlie has a magic horseshoe, made by his parents, that gives him the ability to shift from horse to man. One day, Shep and Charlie go riding and end up at the local swimming hole. Looking forward to enjoying themselves in the water, Shep strips and jumps in. Before Hoss can shift, a coyote shifter sees them. Coyote decides he wants to have his way with Shep, but first he has to get Charlie out of the way. Coyote runs over to their belongings, takes the horseshoe, and throws it in the water. He knows that Hoss can't turn back into his human form without the shoe. Charlie and Shep are in shock. Shep dives down in the water but he can't find the shoe. He tries again but it's so deep that he isn't able to hold his breath long enough to reach the bottom. Feeling forlorn, Shep finally gives up. He and Hoss go back to the ranch. Shep loves Charlie more than life and wants him back. He must think of something. The longer Charlie is a horse, the greater the chance for him to forget how to be human.
Shep comes up with an idea. He can rent some diving gear and dive down to get the horseshoe. But it is more complicated than he thinks. He can't get the gear without taking a course in diving. Although their communication is limited, Shep still tries to keep in touch with Hoss. Shep misses being with Charlie. He is spreading himself too thin going back and forth to the diving classes and trying to run the ranch. It seems to be taking forever to get to the point where Shep can help the man he loves.
Before reading this story, I had my doubts about a shifter story since they are not my favorite, but I am very glad I did read it. The length Shep is willing to go to for Charlie is admirable. I could feel Shep's anxiety and sadness when Hoss couldn't shift back and it broke my heart. Besides the sadness Shep and Hoss felt, Hoss being a horse also created some funny situations. The trickster coyote is a character who didn't know when to give up but he makes a good antagonist. Thanks, Kayla, for a shifter story I actually enjoyed. If you like cowboys, horses, ranches, diving, and happy endings, then you may enjoy this story.
