A pet adoption leading to lasting love?

Kelly Haas thought he’d lost everything when his first dog, Sally, passed away. He wasn’t looking for a new pup, but couldn’t resist checking the local rescues. One look at Louie and Kelly knew he’d found the right dog—a happy beagle. When Kelly meets the man running the rescue, he realizes he’s smitten with Rob, too.

Rob McMann isn’t the type of man to fall for a potential animal adopter, but he still believes in happy endings for the animals—and himself. Kelly isn’t like the other adopters. He knows how to get Rob, a perpetual loner, to come out of himself. He can be open with Kelly, but he leans on him hard when he hits a low time in his life.

Can these two find the love they deserve while raising four dogs, or are they destined to just be friends?

Book Review

I didn’t realize this was part of a series until I received the ARC. I can safely say, this can be read as a standalone.

This is a “kettlecorn” read - it’s fast, it’s sweet, and it’s short. As typical of short stories, the romance moves at lightning speed; Kelly and Rob go from strangers to “I love yous” in a week.

There is some light tension to offset what could become a very saccharine read - Rob is coping with the passing of his mother, who disavowed him for being gay, and the antagonism of his sister for the same reason.  Both men are experiencing insecurities of a new relationship, for example, they assume the other has a girlfriend, and that hugging another man is automatically cheating. All behaviors which drive me batty, but, they provides enough tension to move the relationship forward.

To conclude, this is short story about two men finding a deep connection and for their rescue dogs. There is some antigay sentiment expressed, there are allusions to a controlling ex-boyfriend, and a bit of dramatic misunderstanding. If you like a book with numerous sex scenes, playful puppies, and snuggling on the couch, this might be for you.
