DAVID:

It’s my first week in town, and I’m being hunted.

Ordinarily, I wouldn’t mind being chased down the street by a wall of muscle—if he weren’t a bounty hunter. He has the wrong man, but he’s looking at me like I’m exactly what he needs. Imagine my surprise when he’s behind the desk at my job interview, and he doesn’t just want me on the team, he wants me on the case—his case.

That would make us partners.

But we have a serious problem. Cole’s real bounty is for my cousin, and I know he’s innocent. Cole wants to help me prove it, but the pressure’s rising, and I know just how to release it.

I’m not the bounty, but I’m the one he’s claiming.

COLE:

He’s not my original target, but I’m keeping him.

As a bounty hunter, I don’t make mistakes—until I accidentally end up chasing David. He’s innocent of everything but the dirty way he looks at me. When a case of mistaken identity leads to David becoming my new partner, I get him exactly where I want him—by my side.

My instincts never lead me wrong, and they’re pointing to David.

He has a good heart under that stunning body, and I can’t resist helping him. They think his cousin’s guilty, but we’re going to clear his name. I’m on the hunt, and nothing’s going to stop me.

When I’ve got the right man, I never let go.

Book Review

“You are like my shield, the one that keeps me safe so let me do the same thing for you.” ~ Maria Bastida

When David arrives in the city, he expects things to be different, but he does not expect to be chased down on the street while on the way to an interview. It turns out to be a case of mistaken identity, but it’s still a tense and upsetting situation.

David continues to his interview and the man who was pursuing him, Cole, is still following him, which is curious. It turns out that Cole works at the place where David is going. David meets the people he is there to interview for and settles in. Cole walks in a few minutes later. They are both surprised to find that David is interviewing for a job in Cole’s office but pretend that they haven’t met. Cole is particularly interested in David, because the fugitive he’s trying to bring in for a bounty, the one he mistook David for, is David’s cousin, Oliver.

After David is hired, he’s assigned to help Cole track Oliver down. David swears Oliver would never deliberately have done anything wrong; there have to be extenuating circumstances. David works with Cole to find him, but to prove his innocence. Cole has been a bounty hunter for a long time. He’s heard it all; everyone says they are innocent. Even though it means losing his bounty, there’s something about David’s faith in his cousin and his conviction that he is not a criminal that gives him pause.  Working together so intensely stokes the sexual attraction. Neither man has any qualms about expressing it. Soon, they are lighting the sheets on fire with an intensity neither man has ever known before. Cole realizes that it’s not just sex that fuels the feelings between them. In David, he has found a man who he wants to keep by his side, as a partner, and as a lover.

As Cole and David begin to investigate Oliver, all they find is evidence of what a good guy he is; dedicated, compassionate, and nurturing. Everyone has nothing but glowing comments about him and are concerned that he has disappeared. His volunteer and job-related activities are impressive and the impact he has had on the community inspiring. As jaded as Cole is, he has to admit that as unlikely as it sounds, the man he’s pursuing is not guilty. There has to be more to the story than they know.

This is the second book in the ‘Hightower Heat’ series, and it’s just as steamy as the first. David has an unusual combination of small-town innocence, but under his sweet exterior is a man who can hold his own, in and out of bed. Cole is tough on the exterior, but is a good guy. He may seem formidable, but has the ability to be passionate and nurturing. David and Cole are an interesting combination, but they work. Jason has created another exciting, action-packed, steamy story, which makes a great addition to the series.
