Book Review

As horrible as Pryor's life has become, and as much as he mourns his daughter Lily's disappearance, he is only human. He needs love and support as much as any of us, and he is lucky enough to get it from Ned. Once he accepts that, there is an option for more, and that, I think, is what this story is really all about. Hope.

Pryor is devastated that his daughter disappeared. He is certain that the white wolf who has appeared in the forest near his house is her. And he is convinced that she will be back for one day, a year after her disappearance. His life has stopped, he no longer works (luckily he apparently has money and doesn’t need a job), and he is still drawn to his daughter, even though she is changed and now lives as a wolf. In a series of flashbacks we find out what happened, how he met Ned, and how he prepares to fix the problem with Lily.

Ned is a simple man, an ex-soldier who became a silversmith. He falls for Pryor as fast as Pryor succumbs to his charms, and supports him all the way. While he doesn’t have children, he understands, through Pryor's stories about Lily, what it means to lose a child. He comes up with a possible solution, and is ready to support Pryor whatever he decides to do.

This story has not got the ending I expected, but, in many ways, that makes it a better tale. The dreamy, mystical quality was wonderful, as was the ultimate resolution. If you like unusual stories, if you enjoy reading about love and hope, and if you're looking for a read that is sad, yet has an ultimately hopeful ending, then you will probably like this novella.
