In a world where a werecat virus has changed society, Roan McKichan, a born infected and ex-cop, works as a private detective trying to solve crimes involving other infecteds.

Between his mutating virus and his rocky relationship with his artist boyfriend, Dylan, Roan has enough problems to solve without taking on other people's, but that's the nature of his work. Someone has to look into the case of the murdered trans woman, and if the perp is the dirty cop Roan suspects it is, the police are not the right people for the job. But now Roan has a new obstacle to overcome: someone caught part of his transformation on video, and the media frenzy is making it hard to do his job.

One case nets him a hockey team full of new friends. Another leads to an attempt on his life. And Roan's hustler sidekick drags him on a quest for revenge. With his world and his body both in turmoil, Roan is finding it harder and harder to see the line between justice and vigilantism.

Book Review

'Freefall' is the fourth book in Andrea Speed's 'Infected' series and it's very aptly named. Roan seems to be on a giant freefall express with his depression, his health, his pill addiction, and his anger issues. I love how and where the author seems to be taking us, though, because it is one heck of an exciting ride. Once again, the story is filled with so much activity, all connected, that there is absolutely no possible chance of getting bored or losing interest.

In this installment, Roan has more than one case he's working on and none of them are easy. He has a cold case about a missing boy, Holden asks him to look into the death of one of his hustler clients, and the Church of Divine Transformation is back causing all kinds of trouble. All of this somehow stays on level with the very bizarre physical transformations that continue to happen as his lion DNA integrates even more fully within him. It's crazy, let me tell you.

Fiona is back as his dominatrix/assistant. Dylan is still hanging on, poor guy, as the new boyfriend which is extremely difficult as Roan is no picnic to try to be in a relationship with. And it's getting harder because Roan is the epitome of strong and silent; he doesn't share or communicate anything that is happening to him, so Dylan is constantly left holding the bag. Holden is fantastic and I'm really enjoying the growth of his character as he becomes more and more Roan's unofficial assistant. I look forward to seeing so much more of all of them.

As is typical of this author, the writing is crisp, sharp, and clean. Dialogue and snarky comments are in full in-your-face mode and just make me love Roan even more! I'm rooting for Dylan because I really think this is someone Roan needs in his life. I'm excited to keep reading to see where the author will take us!
