Book Review

Four hot short stories from an author whose work I really like, color me happy. Just enough to fill a short break if you read each one separately, or a nice hour’s entertainment if you want it all in one go, this collection has a nice variety of settings and characters. The one thing they all share is a great sense of humor, and a very high heat level.

Cooking Up Trouble
Short, very sweet, and fun story about a cop, Charlie, who works in a soup kitchen and runs into a pastry chef, Grant, who helps out as well. With Charlie being tall, strong, and quiet and Grant being slight, quirky, and a babbler of epic proportions, their finding each other and figuring out exactly how attracted they makes for a very humorous tale. And as different as they may seem, the way they click in the bedroom is just the cherry on their cake.

Charlie is very down-to-earth and the fact he helps out in a soup kitchen on his days off work just shows that he’s a great guy. Despite everything he has going for him, he sounds quite lonely, even a little shy. I suspect he intimidates a lot of men, but not Grant. Charlie really opens up once he sees there is no fear or judgment, and I loved seeing him relax in Grant’s company.

To say Grant is quirky is probably an understatement. He is so full of energy, and has a need to share every thought in his head, I can see how he and his tendency to babble might be too much for a lot of people. He is a real sweetheart though, and very much into cooking and baking, so he makes a great partner for Charlie.

If you like opposites attracting, if you enjoy men who know what they want and go after it as soon as they see the other party is interested as well, and if you’re looking for a fun, sweet read with instant heat between new lovers, then you will probably like this short story.

Getting Out More
Two little boys who decide their recently divorced dad “needs to get out more” is just too cute. After reassuring each other that mommy isn’t coming back, they set out to find a suitable man for Daddy to date. The guy they come up with is their biology teacher, and I loved seeing their scheming little minds at work. With the typical innocence of children, they see no obstacles, other than how to get them to meet, and proceed without any caution whatsoever.

Rowdy is a cowboy, and he loves his boys. But he’s seen through their antics, after having been talked to about the doctor, one of the boys’ teachers, and any other men they seem to think might interest him. Now that the boys are off to spend time with their mother, all he wants is a quiet night with his buddy Darren.

Darren is a great buddy, but it didn’t seem to me as though that was all he wanted to be. The way he asks about Rowdy’s dates, and some “weird silences” between the men told me all I needed to know. Rowdy takes a little longer to figure it out, but when he does? Wham! The heat is on.

If you like friends to lovers stories set in small towns, if two men who are made for each other finally getting the message seems like a good idea, and if you’re looking for a sweet read with quite some heat at the end, then you will probably like this short story.

Tanned
Short, hot, and very entertaining story about two gay cowboys. If you have ever wondered what they might get up to when riding fence, this is your chance. And let me tell you, it isn’t just the weather and outside temperature that are hot!

Danny is the owner’s grandson and loves the ranch. He’s been called a lazy city-slicker since he left to get a college education, but what’s behind the insult is the fact that someone found out he is gay and this is the way for the ranch hands to insult him without seeming to be homophobic. Danny knows what’s behind the taunts, but he is one tough cookie. He will not let them ruin his life which he thoroughly enjoys, even if riding fence is not his favorite activity.

Cary is fairly new and has been told that Danny is lazy. Not finding that to be true he starts wondering what is going on until he figures it out. He has never felt so bad before and decides to make it up to Danny. And that is when the temperature REALLY starts rising.

If you like gay cowboys, if you enjoy hot stories about hotter men making out and more in the back of a pickup truck, and if a brief “excursion” into the heat of a Texas summer is what you’re looking for, you may like this short story.

Hell Bent For Leather
This story is all about the heat between two strangers. A bartender and a biker seem like a good match, and the way these two share a bike? Very hot!

Garrett likes to ogle good-looking guys while he works—from a safe distance and without them noticing, of course. And then one night a biker arrives at the bar and ogles right back, while Garrett is up on the roof taking a break. Garrett isn’t sure what to think, but once he serves the man a drink or two, and gets an invitation for a ride on the biker’s Harley—well! It’s a wonder they make it to the biker’s home…

Dominic may look like a tough biker, and he definitely knows what he wants, but he is a nice guy. He’s clearly interested in Garrett, and very good at making clear what he wants. Since they both agree on what they’d like to do, and neither is into delayed gratification, they jump right into the action.

If you like insta-lust, hot stories and hotter men, and if you’re looking for a read where the guys make no bones about what they want, then you will probably like this short story.
