Book Review

It has been a while since I got the opportunity to enjoy a story in this very interesting shifter world created by Charlie Richards. The idea of a marine park, World of Aquatica, being built and run by an alpha and beta while many of the animal “attractions” are, in fact, actually shifters is such a unique take on shapeshifter lore. Kaiser and William Roush are both squid, William being a giant squid while I am not sure yet what type Kaiser is, and they own and operate this fabulous aquatic park while protecting their very distinctive “pack” from being discovered by humans. John is Grisham’s (from the fourth installment) captain at the police station and his son and his family are visiting John when he and William meet. What a way to deal with a newfound mating, especially since John’s son seems to be a little bigoted! Uh-oh.

John is surprised when this gorgeous man asks him out when he and his family are at the marine park. John has really never shared his bisexuality with his son since he hasn’t dated at all since Jonathan’s mother left them when his son was two. John can’t resist the magnetic draw to William even though, at first, he doesn’t understand (or know) that it’s a mate bond. I really liked the way William told John about shifters and his own animal half. These two had some serious chemistry and their man-on-man action was very hot.

I have been waiting for one of the Roush brother’s stories ever since the first novella in this series, but I have to admit to being disappointed in this tale. I would have liked it to be longer so I could have had more backstory on William. He’s over three centuries old and I’m fairly certain there’s some interesting history there. This installment was very much insta-lust and insta-love which, granted, to a certain degree each of the stories in the series have been, but I felt that William and John’s story truly wasn’t much more than that. I really would have enjoyed getting to know these men better and to see their mating in all its potential glory. Of course, this is only my opinion and perhaps the fault lies with me in not feeling the connection I had hoped for. I do look forward to Kaiser’s story and I hope it’s next in line in the series.
